VALUE.

February 24, 2020

The intrinsic value of something, according to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, is “the value that something has ‘in itself,’ ‘for its own sake,’ or ‘in its own right.’” In every person we speak to, we try to instill the knowledge that they are incredibly special, unique, and worthwhile (in other words, valuable) just by being themselves!

We know that as our students grow and are exposed to more people and more experiences, they will inevitably encounter situations that hurt them in some way. We’ve all experienced them: fallouts with friends or a romance that sours, academic challenges or disappointing performances in sports or creative endeavors – at some point, painful experiences are a part of everyone’s lives. And we know that for many children, their struggles and challenges can be exponentially harder to endure – poverty, abuse, family instability and more are all too heartbreakingly real for far too many of our kids.

But The Set Me Free Project wants every person we speak with to know: no matter what happens in your life, no matter what anyone says or does to you, YOU are VALUABLE. You are special, unique, and worthwhile – and you always will be, just because you are you!

If every human being understands that they are intrinsically, irrevocably valuable and nothing (and no one!) can take that value away, it is that much harder for a trafficker to groom or victimize our youth. And if every single person recognizes the intrinsic worth of every other, it will be that much harder for any human being to hurt or victimize any other. We can prevent trafficking before it starts, and it begins with education – and VALUE.
